The PRINCE2 certification scheme has been developed to offer three levels of certification, Foundation, Practitioner and Professional.
AXELOS has also developed PRINCE2 Agile, a complementary agile project management qualification.
Update to PRINCE2 Best Practice Guidance
AXELOS is currently revising our PRINCE2 guidance and the associated Foundation and Practitioner exams. This has been prompted by changes in business practice since the last edition of PRINCE2, as well as expert feedback from PRINCE2 practitioners.
The existing 7 PRINCE2 principles, themes and processes will remain, though we are updating the way they are presented. PRINCE2 2009 certification will also still be current, but the update places a greater emphasis on tailoring PRINCE2 to the needs of organizations and project environments, enabling anyone managing a project to get the best from the PRINCE2 methodology.
The new version of PRINCE2 will be launched in mid-2017 and we will update this website with more information in due course.
See our PRINCE2 2017 page for more information.
There are two routes towards obtaining the PRINCE2 certifications - you can sit the exams at the end of a training course with an Accredited Training Organization (ATO) or Accredited Trainer, or study privately and then book the exam without a training course via one of the PRINCE2 Examination Institutes.
For details of training courses, use our search facility to locate a training provider.
Route to certification
You must pass the Foundation examination before the Practitioner examination, either on the same day or separately.
If you have previously passed the Foundation examination or one of the certifications approved as prior learning, you qualify to sit the Practitioner examination without needing to re-sit the Foundation.
Read our guide to which certifications are now recognized as approved prior learning for the PRINCE2 Practitioner qualification (PDF, 286KB).
If you sit the Foundation exam only, and pass, you will receive a Foundation examination certificate. However, if you sit both the Foundation and Practitioner exam on the same day, and pass both, you will receive a Practitioner examination certificate only.
As of 1 October 2016, individuals who hold PRINCE2 Practitioner, Project Management Professional® (PMP), Certified Associate in Project Management® (CAPM), and IMPA Levels A,B,C and D® (Certified Projects Director) certifications are able to take PRINCE2 Agile examination. This is an extension of the previous prerequisites for PRINCE2 Agile and will initially run until 31 December 2017.
You must pass the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam before you can sit the PRINCE2 Professional examination.
