Continuing our series of blog posts on PRINCE2 Agile® Foundation certification, Allen Philip Abraham – IT project consultant – who took the course through Logical Model – explains what he learned from the experience.
With an IT functional background and solid operational experience gained in the banking and aviation sectors, I began to think about the direction I wanted to take my career. As I explored the opportunities, my interest in project management and business analysis roles grew, prompting me to build my competency in these disciplines.
During my studies, I came across PRINCE2 Agile Foundation which was particularly appealing, due to the fact I already had prior knowledge of Agile methodology. This would make it easier for me to understand the content and successfully complete the course.
So, when I took the certification, I was in the midst of a career change and keen to learn as much as I could about my chosen new path. Now, having been through the process, I can honestly say that it has changed the way I look at project management as a career.
PRINCE2 Agile Foundation has given me new-found insight into project management’s contribution beyond successful delivery. Before starting the course, I was already sold on the value of Agile methodology – but curious to find out how combining it with an established project management framework would actually work.
The course answered my questions in full; laying out how to combine the best of both worlds and convincing me that PRINCE2 expertise should be more widely adopted: while Agile focuses on the application delivery, the PRINCE2 framework provides a wrap-around structure for decision making. So, although there are processes in Agile for product delivery, PRINCE2 provides principles, themes and processes for project management and its governance.
Benefits for all
Anyone with a passion to understand or switch to project management would find value in completing this course.
Although no experience is mandated, some prior knowledge of either PRINCE2 project management or Agile methodology is an advantage; I certainly found this to be the case. It meant that I had many “Aha” moments as I progressed through the material and I’m sure others from a similar functional IT background would too.
Interestingly, I also found that PRINCE2 principles have a lot in common with the Agile manifesto itself – it’s like a match made in project management heaven.
Ultimately, everyone’s journey to PRINCE2 Agile Foundation certification will be unique – but it will certainly be beneficial.
