As a PRINCE2-qualified project manager, I’ve tailored every project I’ve ever worked on.
That’s why it’s great to see that the principle of tailoring runs explicitly throughout the updated PRINCE2 guidance and how it can be tailored for projects in any environment: small, agile or large scale.
Importance of tailoring to deliver PRINCE2 projects
It is important for PRINCE2 practitioners to understand that it’s not necessary to adopt or implement the method end-to-end, either because it’s not viable or that a programme director has issued instructions to go only so far!
Clearly, the new PRINCE2 material – which I’ve studied and taken the exam in as part of an AXELOS trial for the update – is also responding to the negative feedback received about being top-heavy or bureaucratic. I’ve witnessed this situation when working on project delivery within a smaller organization where its approach to project management was immature. Proposing any project method was a hard sell; instead I had to adapt and tailor the method to work in the project environment and avoid the kick-back from trying to go in “all guns blazing” with PRINCE2.
Increased alignment with programme management
For people who are new to PRINCE2, I can recommend the updated guidance as much easier to navigate and more coherent in its flow. And for those who are interested in going beyond project management into programme management, the updated guidance is more aligned with the MSP® (Managing Successful Programmes) best practice and certification.
Overall, having the PRINCE2 Practitioner certification has enabled me to apply the principles, have a structured approach to projects and be less reactive regardless of the size, scale or volatility of the project.
Building on PRINCE2 2009
PRINCE2 2017 is certainly in keeping with the previous version of PRINCE2 but, now, it’s less about what is right or wrong and more about demonstrating what is best practice and how to tailor it to your organization and project. This complements how companies are evolving and the benefits they need to gain from project delivery.
