ITIL® Practitioner to help organizations and individuals increase the value they obtain from adopting the ITIL framework

AXELOS has announced that ITIL Practitioner – the new qualification of the world’s most widely adopted service management framework – will launch globally in February 2016.

Speaking at the FUSION15 service management conference in New Orleans, USA, AXELOS CEO Peter Hepworth said that the new qualification was the most significant recent evolution in the ITIL best practice framework, which was first introduced in 1989 and is now - after going through several iterations - used in more than 150 countries globally with more than 300,000 ITIL exams sat in 2014. As part of the development of ITIL Practitioner, AXELOS has used crowdsourcing – gathering ideas, current challenges and advice from IT service management (ITSM) professionals from across the world.

ITIL Practitioner will equip ITSM professionals with skills to successfully adopt and adapt ITIL to improve service management capabilities in line with business goals. It will be the next step after ITIL Foundation for professionals who have already learned the basics of ITSM and the business value of well-designed and delivered services.

A new publication “ITIL Practitioner Guidance” will cover the skills and practical application of knowledge and will be available early 2016, with the first exams being sat in February. While self-study is allowed, it is strongly recommended to attend an accredited training course run by AXELOS’ global partner network.

Peter Hepworth said: “As an organization we are always on the lookout for new practices, which we will link to the stable core of ITIL’s best practice framework. The new ITIL Practitioner qualification and the accompanying guidance is a response to practitioners’ requests for additional, practical elements to complement the existing ITIL guidance.

“While the ITIL Foundation qualification confirms a good understanding of what service management is and introduces all the relevant ITIL concepts and the language, the ‘how’ is addressed only very briefly.  ITIL Practitioner comprises key skills, techniques and helpful worksheets and templates to help practitioners start adopting and adapting ITIL within the organization.”

Development of the new qualification and guidance has been led by AXELOS head of ITSM Kaimar Karu and the ITIL Practitioner Architect Team (PAT) - Kevin Behr, Karen Ferris, Lou Hunnebeck, Barclay Rae, Stuart Rance and Paul Wilkinson – which has brought years of experience from all aspects of ITSM.
