If you ask most people what motivates them to do a good job, money will probably be one of their top answers. This is unsurprising; we work for money after all. Very few of us would continue to do our jobs if we didn’t need to get paid.

However, paying employees fairly for their work should not be considered (as some managers seem to think) a reason for employees to go above and beyond. If you want to use money as an incentive to motivate your employees, you should be thinking along the lines of bonuses tied to outcomes through the year; extra money linked to an employee being motivated to put in extra effort to achieve good results.
