Training and Examinations
How can I find a Training Provider?
Training is delivered by Axelos' global network of Accredited Training Organizations.
For more information see the Training section of our Examination Institute partner, PeopleCert, website.
What is the cost of a Training Course?
Each Accredited Training Organization (ATO) sets their own price for a course, so this will vary from ATO to ATO. Contact an ATO to confirm the cost and course delivery details.
What are the Delivery Methods of Training courses?
Training is available via our Accredited Training Organizations or their approved partners in many formats, including face-to-face training in a physical or virtual classroom, or via distance learning which may be delivered via Learning Technologies or other methods. Some training solutions may be a combination of both. For more information, see the Training section of our Examination Institute partner, PeopleCert, website.
Am I able to self-study for examinations?
Candidates are able to self-study (i.e. take the examination directly from Axelos' Examination Institute (PeopleCert) without attending an accredited training course) for the Axelos certifications with the exception of higher level ITIL examinations. All higher level ITIL examinations require a candidate to complete mandatory accredited training before the examination due to the deeper level of understanding that is gained through an accredited training course.
For more information, see our Certifications section.
How can I become and Accredited Training Organization (ATO) or Accredited Trainer?
As of January 2018, Axelos' sole Examination Institute (EI) is PeopleCert, who offers accreditation services. Contact PeopleCert for details of their accreditation processes and for more information about becoming an Axelos ATO or accredited trainer.
NOTE: Any training organization who wishes to offer training and examination services to individuals or organizations must be accredited. Organizations offering training who are not accredited by an approved Examination Institute may be in breach of Intellectual Property law.

If a PRINCE2 6th edition Practitioner claims their badge, maintains a MyAxelos subscription and logs 20 CPD points each year for three consecutive years, their certification expiry date will be updated without having to re-take exams.

Certifications
ITIL
What is ITIL?
ITIL is a professionally recognized certification scheme that provides comprehensive, practical and proven guidance for establishing a service management system, providing a common glossary of terms for businesses using IT enabled services.
ITIL supports organizations and individuals to gain optimal value from IT and digital services. It helps define the direction of the service provider with a clear capability model and aligns them to the business strategy and customer needs.
Please see our ITIL section for additional information.
What are the recommended routes from ITIL v3 to ITIL v4?
If you have only taken ITIL v3 Foundation, then the recommended approach is to take ITIL 4 Foundation in order to be able to transition to the new scheme. There is a large amount of new material in ITIL 4 Foundation therefore a new single exam is required to assess end learner’s knowledge of the new ITIL 4 Foundation guidance.
Alternatively, you also have the option of obtaining 17 credits from the ITIL v3 scheme which would make them eligible to take the ITIL 4 Managing Professional transition module to migrate to ITIL 4 scheme.
Will ITIL v3 be discontinued?
Axelos has taken the decision to discontinue ITIL v3, by the end of 2021.
The confirmed timings are as follows:
- ITIL v3 Foundation (English) was discontinued on 1 July 2021
- ITIL v3 Intermediates (English) to be discontinued as of 1 January 2022
- ITIL 4 Transition examination (English) to be discontinued as of 1 July 2022
- Translated guidance and examinations discontinuation dates will be announced on a case-by-case basis based on the corresponding product release dates for the ITIL 4 higher modules.
Can my organization achieve ITIL certification or compliance?
ITIL certification is not achievable, because ITIL® is a framework of guidance and not a standard; however, an organization can achieve ISO/IEC 20000 certification. This is the standard for IT Service Management which is underpinned by ITIL best practices. If adopted and adapted effectively, ITIL principles can help organizations to meet the requirements and can help an organization achieve certification when audited by a registered certification body.
For more information, see the International Organization for Standardization website.
Software Tool vendors can obtain endorsement of their tools for "ITIL Process Compliance" under Axelos' ITIL Software scheme.
For more information, see the ITIL Software Scheme section of our website.
